I had the same experience in 1971. The centerfold told me that she was photographed with a very large format color negative which was used to make a very large color print that was then airbrushed (yes, on the actual print) and then this print was again photographed and then reduced in size to blend the airbrushing back down so as to make it all but imposible to see... clever...!
