Don't blame PhotoShop. This is nothing new and it's not limited to celebrities. Here's a scan of of my high school graduation picture, taken in springtime 1960. It's fairly obvious that it's a black & white photo that has been manually colored. Not as obvious is the fact that two teeth have been painted in. My teeth are not arranged properly in my mouth and, if I smile while looking somewhat straight at a camera, it appears that there are teeth missing on both sides of my mouth. The same thing was done with my college picture in 1964. I have since learned to turn my head to eliminate the illusion.

Also, they removed a zit from my nose and I was never able to comb my hair to the perfection that you see on the photo.

Socrates, looks like you got the "glamour" version of the standard senior portrait retouch. I was a negative retoucher back in the day and we were directed to remove zits only. Some eye glass glare was toned down by the print retoucher but that's about it.

I once had the pleasure of meeting a playboy centerfold. It was at a show that i attended
and she was kind enough to take a picture with me.At that time i did not see the photo shot
in the magazine. When i finally got to see the photo i did not recognize her as being the same
person i took the picture with. I would not have known it was the same person.

So you're saying you didn't recognize her with her clothes off?

I don't doubt that at all. Of course, it could also be the result of your employer's clientele. In any case, however, you did both the standard version and the glamour version without benefit of PhotoShop.

I also have a photo taken by an itinerant photographer sitting on his dilapidated pony in 1949 (my avatar). As far as I can tell, no true retouching was done but he did use black & white film and he manually colored in the entire photo, including the hedge in the background. Again, no PhotoShop.

I've seen this article on other boards and discussion forums.
My husband's High School portrait is hideous with the airbrushing they did to it.

At least now we can have fun with Photoshop and create to our own desires right?
