    Detail 2

If I run the background copy layer thru adjust for exposure and color, click OK.. Then try to run detail 2 on it, cs4 crashes. (Did not with detail 1) Using a Mac 10.5.8. running dual intel. I deleted detail 1, upgraded permissions, did all the machine maintenance. rebooted all - has happened several times. Got any ideas? BTW - the new software is fantastic. Using adjust, detail2, simplify, remask2 (really good), and djpeg. This is the only problem.

    jlphotos,

I tried reproducing this behavior but was unable to. We definitely want to figure out what is causing this. Would you be able to provide me with a little bit more information?

Are you working on Mac or Windows?

What size (in pixles) is the image you are working on?

What settings did you use in Adjust?

Does the crash occur as soon as you try to open Detail, while you are making adjustments or during post processing when you are saving it back to Photoshop?

OK... Mac book pro version 10.5.8, dual intel processors 2.4 Ghz, 2GB ram.
Sony raw file (36.26MB 6048 x 4032 pixels) from bridge to acr. minor adjustments. Open in CS4 as standard file (not a smart object). CS4 file is still 6048 x 4032 pixels at 300 ppi for 20.16 x 13.44 inches. 8 bit mode, prophoto color space. duplicate the layer. No adjustments except: Select adjust 3 filter. Set adaptive exposure to .38, regions 8. No detail adjust. Color: adaptive saturation to .13, regions 6. Click OK. Select detail 2 filter. Only visible sign is the hourglass. In about 5 seconds from selecting the detail 2 filter, CS4 completely crashes. It doesn't lock up, or tie up memory trying to do something, no weird visuals, just a total shutdown of photoshop. Bridge stays up, and ps comes back normally when reopened.

I am having the exact same experience............although I am using a PC with Windows Vista. Pretty much the same size image and the crash doesn't seem to be depend on what the individual settings are. I get the little circular indicator when something is being processed but it just grinds on forever until you touch the mouse and then it says it has crashed. Will reopen normally after shutdown.

I have almost the same problem that jlphotos. Same configuration but 4 GB ram and snow leopard. One time, Detail2 does not open and CS4 crashes immediately. And the second time, DETAIL2 does work ....

Same here w/Mac OS 10.6.2, Photoshop CS4, 2 GB RAM. Sometimes Details 2 works fine, the next time it does not open but crashes Photoshop. Sometimes, not always, Photoshop has trouble opening again until I restart. I am working on 50 +/- MB files. I think it is a memory problem, as it's more prevalent after I've been scanning; maybe the scanner ties up too much RAM that's not released until a restart? I have Adjust 3, Clean 2 installed as well as Detail 2; the others seem to work OK.

Thanks everyone for the input. It sounds like a memory problem. To check, try using it with a smaller image to see if it works or not.

Yes, it's definitely how memory is allocated and managed; however: I added up a total of 62 plugins, 6 from Topaz, and 3 raw converters, and detail 2 is the only one that causes problems. If I bring up detail 2 as the first step from raw (38 meg, 16 bit raw file in prophoto) it works just fine. But, later in the processing, everything runs slowly. If I try to use it after a curves or other ps adjustment layer, especially with mulitple layers, it crashes ps most of the time. When invoking it, I get the swirling apple circle for a few seconds, then crash. The whole system has to be shut down and restarted to get back to a normal speed so something isn't fitting in memory correctly somewhere. Must be unique to my system somehow. Nice program. It does effects that no others will do as well. But, not much good if I can't use it.
