Enhance DVD (480p) to HD (720p)

Enhance DVD (480p) video to HD (720p)

Unlike other scaling approaches, Topaz Enhance uses "super-resolution" based approach to truly increase video resolution. This innovative technology takes information from multiple frames to restore true video information and details rather than just "filling in the spaces" with junk information by scaling. This results in an actual resolution increase - something that has only recently been made possible using this technology.

Here's an example:

Topaz Enhance upconverts video and increases resolution with a much better result than native After Effects scaling or any other third-party filter.

Converting DVD to HD video - A Quick Tutorial

This example illustrates how to enhance DVD video into HD video. Click here to download the After Effects project file and original video.

In this example, the video clips “dvd_nasa_filemode.avi” is ripped from a DVD and re-compressed into a DV clip to reduce size. The DVD is created from a film material (24 FPS) using 3:2 pull-down. You can load the project file, dvd2HD.aep”, to see how we did it. It is created using After Effects 6.5.

Here are the steps to create the project:

Step 1: Convert 29.97 fps 3:2 pulldown video into its true 23.976 fps video:
  • Create a fresh new project
  • Import footage “dvd_nasa_filmmode.avi” into the project.
  • Set 3:2 Pulldown phase: Right click the footage name and bring up the “Interpret Footage” dialog. (Or just Ctrl-F). Click the button “Guess 3:2 Pulldown”. After effect will correct detect the effective frame rate as 23.976 and WWSSW pulldown phase.
  • Create composition and name it as “1:30fps->24fps”. Make sure to set the frame rate as 23.976. This composition will convert 29.97 fps video into 23.976 true film frame rate. As we have emphasized many times, it is very important that Topaz Enhance inter-frame filters have true frame rate video as input.
  • Put footage into the composition. Now this composition will produce 23.976 fps video to be used in the next step.

Step 2: Enhance to HD resolution:

  • Create composition “2:480p->720p”. Make sure to set the frame rate as 23.976 and size as 1280x720.
  • Put composition “1:30fps->24fps” as footage into composition “2:480p->720p”. Make sure there are > 4 frames outside the composition so that the first frame can be enhanced.
  • Apply the Double Resolution* filter. Now you will see the video size is doubled. Adjust the parameters of the ilter for the best result. Usually the default setting should be fine.
  • Render the composition.

To compare the enhancement result with the original video, you can simple set 200% zoom in composition “1:30fps- >24fps”. Then you can switch back and forth to view the video before and after enhancement at the same size. For any questions, please email us support@topazlabs.com
