Tutorial: Remove Video Noise
How to De-noise video - A Tutorial
This example illustrates video noise reduction. In the example, we are going to enhance “birthday_dv.avi”, which is a small NTSC DV clip recorded by a low-end miniDV camcorder. Due to low lighting and the quality of the camcorder, there are quite bits of noise. In addition, the details are obscured and color looks washed out.
The example project file “denoise.aep” shows how to use Topaz Enhance to de-noise the video. You can load the project file in After Effects 6.5 or later.
There are three compositions in the project.
If you exam carefully the video before and after processing, you can see that the Denoise & Enhance* filter suppresses both luminance and color noise effectively. Unlink any other noise reduction operation, the filter does not suppress small features and details. Actually, it enhances them!
We recommend that you use the Denoise & Enhance* filter for reducing small to moderate among of noise. Topaz Enhance has other filters that can also be used for reducing video noise:
We encourage you to try out the above filters in the example project in place of Denoise&Enhance filter to get a good understanding of how to use different filters effectively.
The Denoise & Enhance* filter is an inter-frame filter (it has “*” as its suffix!), it has to be the first filter to apply in a composition. See the User’s Manual for more information.

There are three compositions in the project.
- Composition “step 1: de-interlace”: is used to de-interlace the footage into progressive video first. This is because the Denoise & Enhance* filter we are going to use can only work on progressive video. We also does some brightness, contrast and saturation adjustment in this composition.
- Composition “step 2: Denoise&Enhance”: applies the Denoise & Enhance* filter to reduce the noise from the de-interlaced video.
- Composition “No denoise”: is for comparison purpose. The original video adjusted. You can switch between this and the de-noised video to compare the noise reduction effect.
- Clean (RGB)* and Clean (YV)*: These filters should be used instead if the motion is not smooth.
- Wavelet Filter: this filter can be used together with Denoise & Enhance* filter, or Clean (RGB/YC)* filters to handle severe noise.
